5 Little Ducks – Printable Activity

Laminate these, place a number on the baby ducks 1-5, and stick magnet tape on the back of them (or not if you just want to lay these out on a table or the floor).  You want your child to lay these out in order, so either tell them to pick up the “blue” one (my number 1 was blue) and put it in the proper position, or if your child is beginning to recognize numbers you can tell them to pick up number 1, and put it in the proper position. 

As you get to the end of the verse, say, “Take away number 5,” then recount the remaining baby ducks out loud, and then sing the verse from the beginning with the new number. 

Over the hills and far away,

Mama Duck said “Quack, Quack, Quack, Quack . . .

But only 4 little ducks came back.

(Go back to the first verse and drop the number by one for the first and last verse, removing the highest numbered duck each time.)

Cucumber and Carrot Art

Here’s a fun way to incorporate C words, painting, shapes and color matching.  Noah loved this, and it kept him busy and focused longer than usual.

 This is a prime example of why I need to post our activities more than once a week.  All I was hoping to do was use two C words to paint a picture.  In the process of doing, this I captured SO many unexpected teachable moments.  I just love it when that happens.

Activity:  Carrot and cucumber painting


  1. One 2-inch piece of sliced carrot.  Make sure one end of it is completely flat so it will mark a complete circle on the page.

  3. Orange and green tempera paint.
  4. Paper.

Directions:  Show your child the vegetables, highlighting the fact that the words start with c, the circle shape, the colors of the vegetables.  Then show your child how to dip the vegetables (flat side down) in the paint and press it on the paper.  Kids LOVE to play with food, and there is so much good vocabulary reinforcement going on in this activity.  We used the green paint for the cucumbers and the orange paint for the carrots, so Noah would have to pay attention to which vegetable he was putting in which paint.  This is moving up the hierarchy of implementing knowledge in activities of daily living.  In other words, it’s great if Noah knows his colors, but we want him to know how to use that knowledge and apply it in real-life situations.

There are so many fruits and vegetables you could use with this activity, and  you could implement color matching in all of them.  I have a feeling we’ll be doing this activity again with all the kids.

B is for Buttons

I picked up a bag of colorful buttons at Wal-Mart last year, just knowing I’d find SOMETHING to do with them.  Haven’t sewn a bit since them, but here’s the next best thing:

This time I just put one different colored button in each tin and let Noah sort them.  I had seen some pre-printed labels for muffin tins for different basic activities, but then I realized they were charging for the downloads, so last night I made my own.  To start with I traced around a cup onto construction paper and then cut out the circles.  I also cut circles from white construction paper and wrote numbers 0 through 6 so we can do some counting activities.  The muffin tins are another great way to practice basic skills.
